Why I'm pro-life

I've been having an ongoing conversation about politics, political rhetoric, and most recently, abortion with an old friend.  Generally I like to keep politics off my blog, but this one really touched a nerve.  Read the latest exchange here. I am "transplanted."

I think I get what you're saying. It's rude and, frankly, sexist to assume that any woman who is a Palin supporter is only doing so because she's a "fellow Vagina-American."

On the other hand, I also don't believe in overturning Roe v. Wade. In my opinion, there is a middle ground. In Spain, they call our abortion policy "abortion on demand." They have a far more restrictive policy in that they allow first-trimester abortions only in the cases of rape, incest, or physical endangerment to the mother. As a result, abortions are far, far more rare. (They also have access to free birth control, but that's neither here nor there.) As rare as the situation may be, I don't think any woman should have to give birth to her rapist's child or give birth when it will end her own life.

Lastly, I don't get what the magazine cover has to do with anything. Do you know how it could be related to the topic at hand?

I could certainly accept Spain's policy as a middle ground. I completely agree that you should never have to give birth if it threatens your own life. I happen to disagree about rape and incest, but given its rarity and charged nature could see allowing abortion in those circumstances.

I'm confused about the cover too. That isn't even Sarah Palin.
